A to Z / F is for Flax

F is for Flax

About 30 years ago, my dad gave me some flax seeds that he had picked up from a farmer in Nebraska.  I was living in Oklahoma at the time and the environment was great for growing the seeds.  I enjoyed the little blue flowers and the dried round seed head that formed after the bloom died.  I would grow the flowers and save seed to replant the next year.  When I moved to Illinois, I brought seed with but never had the same luck with growing flax.

For the past 9 years I have been pretty religious about grinding and eating a tablespoon of flax each day. After my heart attacks (yes - 3 during the course of a week), I started adding ground flax seed to my diet.  Flax is heart healthy with antioxidant qualities, may improve cholesterol,  and lower blood pressure.   It is also a lovely colour!

  1. Oh my gosh, Cheryl! Three heart attacks in a week must have just been so terrifying.
You make such beautiful art and it is happy and positive art, like today's. Do you find that it helps you to manage and perhaps even overcome any worries about your health?
By the way, I use flax seed every day too - on my oatmeal in the morning.

  2. Cheryl,

Flax has a lot of health benefits. A few years ago while on one of my many diets to reduce calories, I incorporated flax into my meal and found a pizza crust recipe which actually turned out to be good. I haven't made it in a while but if you're interested you can find it on my blog, here.

I love this art piece not only because of the soft golden hues with butterflies and a flower but you have a page of mewsic in the mix. Every Monday I co-host Monday's Music Moves Me and I invite you to hit the dance floor with us. Meanwhile if you get a chance you're welcome to stop by to peek at A2Z Creating iPad Art Sketches ‘Fairy’ post on
    Curious as a Cathy! ;)
