 Light bulb moment! Paint the photo and scratch in while the paint is still wet. I don't have any open paint,  so the work has to be fast. Super fast...

 Where i am now:

It's time to get serious about placement and work on the background fabric to prepare for permanent stitching.  The background needs much stability to attach the shards.

 Removal of paint with a rolled up strip of fabric. This process has promise.

 Another fail. I grabbed a silkscreen and attempted some prints. I think my paint was just too thick. The first one was yarn placed under the screen, the second was trimmings from a papyrus plant (that I have successfully overwintered!)

 Instead of struggling with too small photos, tape a few together to create a more manageable surface. Or... "create a quilt block". Now that's thinking!
